The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is a natural wonder situated adjacent to the Table Mountain National Park. Evidence found here supports the fact that the area was inhabited by Stone Age man more than 2000 years before Europeans first discovered this land — it was also part of the Khoikhoi's pastoral land before the Dutch East India Company set up a refreshment station at the Cape.
Many indigenous plants and trees can be found here. The general term for the naturally occurring plant life of the Western Cape is fynbos ("fine bush"), a vegetation type made up of four main plant families.
