Join us for a historical overview of Cape Town on foot. We'll learn about the indigenous Khoisan people and their lifestyle prior to colonisation, and how the Cape of Good Hope came about — from the first Europeans to reach our shores, through the Dutch and British periods, the Apartheid era, and finally the New Democratic South Africa.
Starting at Greenmarket Square and moving on to St George's Mall, you'll see how the naturally available rock was used to construct some of the sub-continent's first buildings — the first government, hospital, church, police station, fire station, banks, cathedral and jail. We'll visit the ruins of the oldest structure built by Europeans in Southern Africa, and see artefacts unearthed during the construction of modern buildings.
The tour doesn't shy away from the dark side of the Cape Colony's history — the system of slavery, and later, apartheid — and how these practices impacted the Khoisan and mixed-race people of the region, before the birth of the New South Africa under leaders like Nelson Mandela.
